Love is a many-splendored thing, especially when you’re gawking at it from the outside. In this column, we’ll be examining the celebrity couples that give us hope for our own romantic futures, and trying to learn what we can from their well-documented bonds.
Everyone has (or should have) that crystallizing moment when they realize they would gladly lay down their life for Colman Domingo, and mine came when I saw him in Janicza Bravo’s 2021 film Zola as Abegunde “X” Olawale, a somewhat terrifying yet compulsively watchable pimp in some of the most iconic onscreen menswear from that year. In real life the 55-year-old Philly–born and –raised actor is even more stylish than the characters he’s played on Euphoria and in countless films, including If Beale Street Could Talk and Sing Sing. My Vogue colleague Hannah Jackson wrote last year that Domingo—who favors brands like Valentino, Louis Vuitton, and Boucheron—was “setting the bar for men’s fashion,” and I’m inclined to agree.
Although I could rhapsodize about how good Domingo looks seemingly all the time, this is actually an ode to a different aspect of Domingo’s life: his marriage of over 10 years to husband Raúl, who was Domingo’s date to the 2025 Oscars this past Sunday and has been a red-carpet fixture alongside Domingo since they met in 2005. (As hard as it might be to believe, some Hollywood relationships actually span multiple decades rather than three months’ worth of carefully orchestrated “impromptu” coffee walks!)
The pair met through Craigslist, which is perhaps the most beautifully 2005 thing I can imagine. “Okay, you gotta picture 17 years ago, I was walking down the street going into a Walgreens in Berkeley, California,” Domingo said on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert in 2022. “A few days later I’m on Craigslist trying to buy a used computer to help with my writing,” he continued. “I went to the home screen, and, you know, they have Missed Connections, things like ads, so I would read them because I’m a romantic. I go to the second page of Missed Connections, and it said, ‘Saw you outside of Walgreens, Berkeley.’” The two met up a few days later, and that was that. “I told him, ‘I think you’re about to change my life, and I love you,’” and we’ve been together ever since,” Domingo concluded.
