Fox is going all-in on its first-year medical drama Doc.
The network has renewed the series, starring Molly Parker, for a second season — and the order is an old-school, 22-episode season, showing a vote of confidence after solid early returns in the ratings. Doc is averaging about 2.3 million same-day viewers, per Nielsen, but grows substantially with streaming on Hulu and other delayed viewing. Fox says the pilot episode, which aired Jan. 7, has hit 16 million viewers across all platforms (including on-air repeats).
Sony Pictures Television and Fox Entertainment Studios produce Doc. Barbie Kligman is the showrunner and executive produces with Hank Steinberg and Erwin Stoff.
“We are thrilled that audiences have embraced season one of Doc,” Fox Television Network president Michael Thorn said in a statement. “Barbie and Hank have done an outstanding job bringing one of the most emotionally powerful series on television to life. Renewing for a second season was an easy decision, thanks to this incredible team, our partners at Sony, and an exceptional cast, led by the talented Molly Parker.”
Added Sony Pictures TV Studios president Katherine Pope, “We’re ecstatic Doc has been picked up for a second season – a testament to the exceptional writing, captivating performances from our talented cast, and the incredible reception from audiences. We’re so grateful to our partners at Fox for their unwavering support as we continue making more episodes of this show.”
The 16 million viewers for Doc’s premiere (which encompasses six weeks of viewing) is the highest cross-platform mark for a Fox series premiere (excluding post-NFL debuts) since 911: Lone Star in January 2020. The show’s same-day audience has also grown in each of the past three weeks.
Along with Parker, the show’s regular cast includes Omar Metwally, Amirah Vann, Jon Ecker and Anya Banerjee. Scott Wolf and Patrick Walker have recurring roles.
Doc joins fellow Fox rookies Murder in a Small Town and Universal Basic Guys in scoring a second season at the network.
