John Goodman is recovering after being injured during the production of an upcoming, untitled Alejandro González Iñárritu movie for Warner Bros. and Legendary, starring Tom Cruise.
The actor “experienced a hip injury,” a Warner Bros. spokesperson said in a statement.
“He received immediate medical attention that led to a brief delay in shooting to allow him time to recover,” the statement continues. “The production resumes shooting next week following John’s full recovery.”
The film was not shooting when Goodman was injured.
The untitled movie, the first to emerge from Cruise’s new deal with Warner Bros. and the first English-language feature from Iñárritu since Leonardo DiCaprio starrer The Revenant nearly a decade ago, is set to hit theaters on Oct. 2, 2026, taking the release date originally occupied by the studio’s Batman sequel.
The film stars Cruise as the most powerful man in the world, who embarks on a mission to prove he’s humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything. Iñárritu co-wrote the script with Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolás Giacobone. Legendary’s Mary Parent produces with Iñárritu and Cruise.
Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde and Riz Ahmed round out the cast.
Cruise’s Warner Bros. pact is a strategic partnership that sees him working with film chiefs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy to develop and produce original and franchise theatrical films, though it’s not a traditional first-look deal.
Iñárritu is a two-time best director Oscar winner, receiving the award for his work on Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) and The Revenant, which also won DiCaprio his first best actor Oscar after four nominations in the category and was nominated for best picture. The director also won Oscars for best picture and best original screenplay for Birdman.
Emmy winner Goodman’s film credits include roles in Argo, Inside Llewyn Davis, The Big Lebowski and O Brother, Where Art Thou? as well as voicing Sullivan in Monsters Inc. and Monsters University. His memorable small-screen roles include work in Roseanne, The Conners and The Righteous Gemstones.
