Kieran Culkin won the Academy Award for best supporting actor at the 2025 Oscars for his role in A Real Pain

During his acceptance speech, Culkin sung praises to his Succession co-star and fellow nominee, Jeremy Strong, and then delighted the audience when he asked his wife for another child.

“By the way, Jeremy [Strong], you’re amazing in The Apprentice,” Culkin said before a brief piece of his speech was cut out during the live telecast for seemingly dropping an F-bomb. “I’m not supposed to single anyone out, it’s favoritism, but you were great.”

Culkin went on to look back on the trajectory of his career leading to his Oscar win, claiming that he has “no idea how I got here,” while noting that acting has always “just been a part of what I do.” He thanked his longtime manager Emily Gerson Saines, adding that his success was “because of [Saines]” and that he’d be “lost” without her and his A Real Pain co-star Jessie Eisenberg.

“Jessie Eisenberg, thank you for this movie,” he said. “You’re a genius, I would never say that to your face. I’m never saying it again, so soak it up.”

From there, Culkin honored his wife, Jazz Charton, with a heartfelt story that referenced his acceptance speech for his best actor win at the 2023 Emmys.

“About a year ago, I was on a stage like this, and I very stupidly, publicly said that I wanted a third kid from her because she said if I won the award, she would give me the kid,” he said. “Turns out she said that because she didn’t think I was going to win.”

After the Emmys, Charton told Culkin, “I guess I owe you a third kid,” to which he replied, “Really? I want four.” The Real Pain actor then recalled the moment — which he said he hasn’t brought up since that very moment — when his wife promised to have a fourth child with him if he won an Academy Award.

“She turned to me – I swear to God this happened – and she said, I will give you four when you win an Oscar,” he said. “I’m really sorry I did this again, and let’s get cracking on the kids, what do you say? I love you.”

Before Robert Downey Jr. presented Culkin with the Oscar, he honored each of the nominees, which included Culkin alongside Yura Borisov (Anora), Edward Norton (A Complete Unknown), Guy Pearce (The Brutalist) and Strong (The Apprentice). Culkin’s big win on Sunday night comes after an impressive awards season where he won the SAG Award and the Independent Spirit Award for his role of Benji Kaplan in A Real Pain roughly a week prior.

Heading into Sunday night, Emilia Perez led the 2025 Oscar nominee list with 13 noms, setting the record for the most nominated non-English-language film at the Oscars. Wicked and The Brutalist followed close behind with 10 nominations each, succeeded by Conclave and A Complete Unknown with eight noms each. See the full winners list here.

During Sunday night’s broadcast, Wicked’s Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo took the stage to perform. Additional performers included Doja Cat, Lisa from Blackpick, Queen Latifah and Raye. The 97th Academy Awards were hosted by Conan O’Brien at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. See the star-studded Oscars red carpet 2025 arrivals from Sunday night.
