Last night’s Fendi show brought us one of the glitziest frows of Milan Fashion Week so far, with Naomi Ackie and Elizabeth Olsen among those who turned out to toast the centenary of the Roman fashion house. The real guest of honor at the label’s big and bold birthday bash of a show, though, was Sarah Jessica Parker, a woman who has done more for the Maison than any other…Well, apart from the members of its proud matrilineage.
Anyway, Carrie Bradshaw herself turned up to the Fendi show, clutching none other than the bag she propelled to fame—or, should we say, the Baguette. In a ribbed knit dress and swooping chocolate cashmere coat, the Sex and The City star accessorized with a pink crossbody iteration of the bag, embellished with candy-pop crystal shards. Chic!
While a touching tribute, her appearance at the show was not exactly a surprise—after all, this is the person who single-handedly turned the bag into a pop cultural icon, when Carrie quipped to a mugger trying to snatch her purple sequined version: “It’s not a bag—it’s a Baguette!”
Over the more than two-and-a-half decades that have passed since then, the original West Village it-girl has been spotted sporting innumerable variations of the oblong-shaped accessory, from the multi-colored woven version she was photographed with back in 2000 to a purple ombré style that she sported front row at the Baguette’s 25th anniversary fashion show in New York in 2022. If anything, she’s committed. In the SATC reboot, And Just Like That…, Bradshaw is seen with two versions of the Baguette: the famous purple sequined style and another pink pailletted version.
Her appearance last night was a reminder of an immutable fact—that while Fendi may have turned 100, Sarah Jessica Parker will be queen of the Baguette forever.
